A lot of people are excited about the upcoming release of the Nokia N97 touchscreen smartphone but recent rumors about the expected price of that phone has made people a lot less interested in buying it than they were before that price was announced. The good news is that the super-high rumored prices of the Nokia N97 that are floating around the web are probably not correct. The Nokia N97 will probably be relatively affordable when it’s finally released in late June although a set price for the phone has not yet been announced.

What happened in the mobile phone news world is that one retailer planning to sell the new Nokia phone (Expansys) went ahead and listed a release date and price on its website despite not having an actual announcement about Nokia regarding this. The price listed on the website was close to a shocking £700 (or $1000). Nobody wants to pay a price like that for a phone in today’s economy. Comparable touchscreen phones are much closer to the £300 or £400 range.

The N97 is a cutting edge smartphone that includes support for their OVI service as well as the Nokia Music Store. Nokia have called the N97 “the most advanced mobile computer” and have done well to keep ahead of current mobile phone usability trends. With more and more people using their phones to browse the net, to access email accounts and share photos online we expect that the likes of the N97 will become the most demanded everyday phone. GPS has also become a standard on handsets and more and more people are expecting their phones to have integrated GPS. App developers are also aware of this and the number of cool GPS reliant applications is growing at a phenomenal rate.

Nokia has come out in the press and said that this rumored price is “outrageous”. The company has not yet said what a more likely price range is, though. People are expecting it to be considerably lower as a result of the reaction to the rumor. What Nokia did confirm was that Expansys was probably fairly close to correct regarding the release date it listed for the phone. They pegged it at June 23rd. As that date nears, we’ll probably hear a lot more about an accurate price for the Nokia N97.

The N97 packs a 3.5-inch, 640 x 360 pixel (that's a 16:9 aspect ratio) resistive touchscreen display with tactile feedback and QWERTY keyboard into this sliding communicator with an "always open" window to favorite internet or social networking sites. Nokia calls it the "world's most advanced mobile computer." To back up the claim they've dropped in HSDPA, WiFi, and Bluetooth radios, A-GPS, a 3.5-mm headjack, 32GB of onboard memory with microSD expansion (for up to 48GB total capacity), and a battery capable of up to 1.5 days of continuous audio playback or 4.5-hours video. 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss glass and "DVD quality" video capture at 30fps, too. The specs are certainly impressive, let's see if the S60 5th Edition OS can support it. The N97 will launch with a retail price set at around €550 ($693) excluding subsidies and taxes, phone to ship in H1 2009.

Nokia have divulged that the expected release date for the N97 is in the first half of 2009 and is expected to hold a pre-tax price tag of 550 Euros. So if you are wanting to get this handset soon after public release expect to take out a higher tariff package if you want it for free.
